The Minister of Health, Carmen Castillo, announced the results of the Third National Health Survey (ENS), the most important and complete that has been carried out to date. The measurement revealed, among other data, that 74, 2% of the population has some degree of obesity in the country .
The study, with respect to overweight population levels, found that 31.2% of Chileans are obese, 39.8% are overweight and 3.2% are morbidly obese , which represents an increase compared to years 2009 and 2010.
On the point of sedentary lifestyle it would reach 86.7% and reach 90% in women and 83% in men over 15 years. The figure decreased comparatively with respect to the previous measurement, a period in which a sedentary lifestyle of 89.4% was registered.
Regarding the concern about the issue of obesity, the Undersecretary of Public Health, Cristian Herrera, said that "these are figures that concern us and should clearly become a priority for the health teams of the next government."
"Reducing these indices will generate positive effects in other health indicators, because obesity is one of the factors that contributes to the development of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular problems, to which we now have to pay even more attention".
In another issue of the same survey, Minister Castillo said that in the country there was " a sustained and significant decrease in the consumption of snuff in Chile ", detailing that between 2003 and 2016, it went from 43%, to 33%
Also, in terms of exposure to cigarette smoke in the home, there are also positive figures, because in the ENS 2009, 69% of homes were smoke-free, while currently it is observed that 84.8% of the population is not exposed.
The Secretary of State stressed that "what pleases us the most is to observe that it is precisely young people, between 20 and 29 years old, who are currently the least smokers. This tells us about the success of the initiatives we have undertaken to defeat the consumption of tobacco in the country. "
Applied between August of the year 2016 and March of the year 2017, the tool measured more than 84 problems and determinants of health, 26 of which were monitored in the measurement of the year 2003 and that of the year 2009.
The survey was face-to-face and was applied to the population over 15 years of age nationwide. Their results provide important inputs for designing and implementing health policies and programs.
